City Guide: New York Cityhttps://vi-vn.about.flipboard.com/inside-flipboard/city-guide-new-york-cityThe capital of the United States for a very short time, New York City would become the cultural capital of the world by the 20th century. Like Paris, it established that position by harboring artists of all stripes: writers, painters, dancers and musicians who carved out “scenes” that would change their respective fields forever.
Sure, NYC is a lot more expensive these days, but that doesn’t mean the city lost its cool—it’s just gotten older, wiser and more reserved. The arts are an institution now, and NYC’s museums, theaters and clubs continue to foster new talent.
It’s not just art. New York is equally amazing at fashion, finance, food, even tech (we see you, Silicon Alley!). Basically, there’s so much going on—how will you know what to do with yourself? Allow us to break it down for you with this collection of topics, magazines and curators killing it on all things New York City:
New York City (topic): To a tourist, New York can seem gigantic. The plus side is there’s always something to discover. Start broad with this topic that covers New York City from many angles.
What Where New York (magazine): The Moment magazine consistently curates the latest content on art, music, design and fashion—which makes them perfect for NYC. This magazine combines their stimulating sense of what’s fresh from a diehard local’s perspective. Read about it here before it becomes passé everywhere else.
Life in Brooklyn (magazine): Curated by The New York Times, this magazine about life in Brooklyn shows how diverse one of NYC’s arguably “coolest” boroughs can be. With stories on young parents in Park Slope, Williamsburg’s wealthy hipsters, and “stoop life” in Crown Heights, Brooklyn is brimming with possibilities.
The New Yorker (publisher): Since 1925, The New Yorker has been covering the cultural life of New York City. In many ways the publication represents a certain type of New Yorker—refined but approachable, intelligent but self-deprecating, and always, always in excellent taste. Learn what makes a New Yorker here.
Garance Doré (publisher): Style blogger Garance Doré is the epitome of the modern New York woman: cultured, stylish and kind. Her site puts style in context: rather than featuring a gallery of candid fashion shots, she puts her own experiences on display, writing about life, love and living well. One part diary, one part inspiration board, and several parts informative, her writing offers a window into contemporary New York City.

Dining out can be a deal breaker. When finding a place for two (or more) people to eat together, you have to consider not just personal preferences, but food allergies, ambiance, location, price, Yelp reviews, etc. What once sounded like a simple meal can quickly evolve into a homework assignment.
So how do you narrow things down? With Flipboard. We’ve looked around and found some of the best topics, magazines and curators related to restaurants, eating out and fine foodstuffs. Dig in before dining out:
Restaurants (topic): Pick a place to eat—like the world’s cheapest Michelin starred restaurant—and discover secret menus, where celebs go to grab a bite, and Anthony Bourdain’s tips for getting a great meal in any city, on any budget.
LA Eats (magazine): Los Angeles loves trends. It’s where “American ideas about food tend to be formulated” and, as such, makes it a “spectacular place to eat.” This magazine keeps you abreast of all the good, bad and wonderfully weird things landing on plates in the City of Angels.
Serious Eats (publisher): Food writing is often stuffed with clichés (see?) — good thing there’s Serious Eats, the site that writes, thinks and eats with originality, in a voice that blends the rich wisdom of food writer Ed McGee with the irreverence and casual intelligence of The Simpsons. One look at their stuff and you’ll be…hungry for more (couldn’t be avoided, sorry).
NYT Critics’ Picks: Restaurants (magazine): With a spate of great critics, a taste for eclectic eats and one gigantic reputation, The New York Times has a certain standard for restaurant reviews. For restaurants, so much rests on one (relatively) short column: a writeup from The Times can make or spectacularly break a new restaurant’s long-term prospects. In this magazine, see who did and didn’t make the cut.
#ChefLife (magazine): Go behind the counter and into the kitchen for a look at food from Chef Calvin Canlas. His magazine has more than recipes or restaurant recommendations—you’ll get to see what life is like from a chef’s perspective—”late night TV, bad habits,” and all.

Since the Republican presidential candidates last gathered on stage, much of the 2016 election oxygen has centered around the format and moderators of the debates. Frustration over the last CNBC debate, in particular, caused vocal criticism from the Republican National Committee and pushed many of the candidates to propose a list of debate stipulations. It’s under these conditions that the Fox Business and Wall Street Journal moderators take to the stage Tuesday night.
Neil Cavuto, one of Tuesday’s three anchors, said his goal is to “make myself invisible.”
“That I’m not the issue…That we’re not the issue. The answers to what we’re raising become the issue,” Cavuto told Politico.
Those issues will likely include questions on the economy and job creation given the financial focus of FBN and WSJ. But candidate dynamics are also expected to come up, especially the controversy surrounding Ben Carson’s portrayal of his personal history.
Keep up with Tuesday’s debate and the ups and downs of the race through Flipboard topics.
Ben Carson: The former neurosurgeon came under intense scrutiny after media reports debunked his claim that West Point offered him a scholarship. Read more about Carson’s past and see if and how the topic comes up on Tuesday.
Jeb Bush: Bush has rebranded his campaign “Jeb can fix it” and hired a new media coach. See how he fares at the next matchup.
Chris Christie: The New Jersey governor was bumped down to the earlier debate for candidates with less support in the polls, despite momentum following town hall where he spoke passionately about treating addiction. See if he’s able to breakthrough at the earlier time.
Taxes: Read up on the latest news about your taxes, an issue often disucssed on the campaign trail.
Presidential debate: Follow this topic to read more on the candidates and issues raised during Tuesday’s two-hour event.

5 Curators to Follow If You Love Gourmet Foodhttps://vi-vn.about.flipboard.com/inside-flipboard/5-curators-to-follow-if-you-love-gourmet-foodFood is many things: sustenance, an excuse to take a break, a chance to taste the world’s diversity. For some people, it’s more, shall we say, refined; for them, food is an art. Which helps explain the existence of gourmet food, both an industry classification for “high-quality premium foods” and an aesthetic one, referring to “elaborate preparations and presentations.”
The concept of gourmet food dates back to France, where a gourmet originally referred to a “connoisseur of delicious things not eaten primarily for refinement.” Modern definitions of gourmet food are elastic, and mostly about simple appreciation and pleasure—say hello to the “foodie.” Semantics aside, Flipboard is full of people who celebrate the diversity of gourmet food—from bloggers to famous chefs—and we’ve picked five of them for you to sample below:
Ruth Reichl: When we interviewed Ruth Reichl last year, we were expecting to hear some great stories from one of the world’s foremost authorities on food. What surprised us, however, was that the former Editor-in-Chief of Gourmet Magazine had gone pleasantly soft. These days the once-feared food critic prefers to champion food she likes, rather than discuss what she doesn’t. In her Flipboard Magazine, she advocates expanding our palates.
Aly Juma: What separates entrepreneur and ideas man Aly Juma from your average daydreamer is his level of passion and devotion. By the looks of his magazines, Aly exhaustively flips articles from a range of sources, making any one of his mags a deep dive into any subject—especially food.
Victor Moruzzi: When it comes to food, Victor doesn’t discriminate. Hot dogs to hot chocolate, Victor’s love for edibles and drinkables qualifies him as a lover of good eats. But his magazine Plating, which shows a variety of beautifully presented dishes, meets the definition of a gourmet food fan.
Whiskey and Soba: In simple terms, the democratization of gourmet food means that more people in more places can eat the type of food that was once reserved for cultural capitals like New York City, Paris or London. One such recent food mecca is St. Louis, home of food writer Spencer Pernikoff’s Whiskey and Soba. Pernikoff is a one-man food magazine, profiling chefs, writing food-focused city guides and taking creative liberties with his leftovers. On Flipboard, Whiskey and Soba showcases this signature high and low approach to gourmet food.
Chef Daniel Boulud: With multiple restaurants and Michelin stars to his name, Chef Daniel Boulud isn’t just a fan of gourmet food—he’s a certified master. Hailed as “America’s most relentless, fun-seeking, demanding and revered chef,” Boulud curates a number of excellent magazines on Flipboard which are as much about the world as they are gourmet food.

Every Wednesday for a little over a year now, we’ve been releasing The Shot, a magazine about all things photography inspiration curated by Flipboard’s photo editors, Steve Fine and Gary Hershorn. Besides the practical gear roundups and tutorials, what makes The Shot so essential is the spotlight shined on some of the world’s best photographers.
Last year, at the height of the Ebola crisis, The Shot featured photojournalist Kieran Kesner. What followed was a harrowing, intimate account of the world’s deadliest disease seen through the lens of a young photographer. On the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, The Shot spoke with shooter Rick Wilking, who lived literally in the eye of the storm and took photos of the aftermath. Wilking told us he sees pictures as a way to teach the next generation “this generation’s mistakes and successes.” And when a massive earthquake struck Nepal, The Shot made space for photographer Omar Havana to share what was happening in devastating, unforgettable detail.
Next week, expect to see a spotlight on Wasteland Weekend, “the world’s largest post-apocalyptic festival,” and stories from the photo conference Photoplus, where major camera manufacturers unveil upcoming products. As news breaks, you’ll also be able to see the reliably brilliant photo galleries focusing on major events of the day.
Want to see our changing planet up close and personal? Do Leicas live up to the hype? In need of photography inspiration to get out and shoot from the world’s best photojournalists and Instagrammers? Follow The Shot to get this carefully curated content delivered straight to your Cover Stories.
