Don’t expect the rest of the US Open to play out as predictably as Day One did. On Monday, tennis’ top players breezed through the first round of play: Last year’s women’s champion, Samantha Stosur, beat her opponent, Petra Martic, 6-1, 6-1—and crowd favorite, Olympic medalist Andy Murray bested Alex Bogomolov Jr., 6-2, 6-4, 6-1, moving one step closer to winning his first Grand Slam.
The Open, which runs from August 27 to September 9, is the fourth and final Grand Slam tournament of the tennis season. More than 700,000 fans are expected to flock to the courts in Flushing, Queens where the competition intensifies over the course of two weeks, culminating in world-class tennis being played on the center stage at the Arthur Ashe Stadium Court, the world’s largest tennis stadium.
This year, Great Britain’s Murray and the United States’s Serena Williams, coming fresh from their Olympic golds in London earlier this month, will try to wrest titles from defending champions, Serbia’s Novak Djokavich and Australia’s Stosur.
